Automation of Shop: Every repair action and inspection to the individual component must be put into record. All assets you have related to equipment maintenance needs to be accessible to the user who needs the part or information to timely correct the conditions.

Class A Truck and Reefer experienced a flat tire over the road. He calls our team to assist in best cost support to finish his load and return back home. He has roughly 4K miles to go to finish the loads he is assigned. I receive the call after a service truck is at the break down site. The front left steer tire has been punctured with a nail (12/32nd tread). The road service mechanic traveled roughly 50 miles to deliver a steer tire with repairs inside it, tire at a cost of $300 dollars less service call. NOTE: No repairs are allowed to a steer tire except in special application of equipment used with limited road time.
By managing their data base on the cloud, I pulled up the vehicle maintenance history on my Droid phone and advised the operator to pull the recently installed G159A at 15/32nd off of the trailer right rear inner as listed in the data base and place it in the steer position. The companion tire to the trailer was 14/32nd and maintained in the same position. The steer tire that had a nail hole was repaired by the service technician on site and mounted on the trailer position. The trailer returned to California, we removed the repaired tire, sent it to our tire supplier for credit/sale. The savings they made was $200 dollars on this break down. The thinking they had was to have the mechanic travel back to town, buy a new steer tire, return and install, but think about the additional down time and discussion on who is covering the additional charges.
Every situation has to be considered, but money accessibility will always drive the action. If the fleet was larger and had a National Account with tire banks in every city, conditions may have been changed. You must have the data, then it needs to be assimilated into usable information along with knowledge to make sound decisions that will not hurt people, equipment and product.
Choosing the right system is important. If your equipment depth is large, you need to hire a full time automation clerk, parts clerk, and management to sustain the systems. No matter the system you use, you need a staff that can use it. The problem is not cost for the system, but the ability to manage it properly.
